There were emotional scenes in Leeds on Sunday, as friends and family of former England national rugby player Rob Burrow ran to fundraise for Leeds Hospitals. The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon was created as a vehicle for fundraising for crucial hospital services in Leeds, after Burrow was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2019.

After pushing him in a wheelchair for the entire 26.2 mile course, Burrow was carried over the finish line by former Leeds Rhinos teammate Kevin Sinfield, whose incredible fundraising efforts have raised over £8m in the fight against MND. Burrow’s wife Lindsey also competed in the marathon, smashing her fundraising target of £7,777 (a reference to Rob’s #7 rugby shirt) by raising a whopping £53,000 as of Sunday. Running alongside her were the 12,000+ others who signed up for the full or half marathon, who Burrow thanked before the race begun.

“I’ve seen the footage of Kevin carrying Rob over the finish line and I just think what a special friendship, what a special bond,” said Lindsey Burrow.

“Rob was delighted to take part in the marathon.

Good on Rob and well done to Kevin Sinfield for all his fundraising efforts!
