Whitehall has been locked down and a man arrested after a car struck the gates to Downing Street, home of the Prime Minister’s official residence. Police immediately apprehended the man, who was arrested and taken for questioning. There were no reports of any injuries and police continue to investigate. There is no indication at this time of the intention behind the crash, or whether it was just the result of poor driving or distractedness, but video footage shows the car travelling at a slow speed directly into the wrought iron gates that block Downing Street.

“At around 16:20hrs a car collided with the gates of Downing Street on Whitehall,” police said in a statement. “Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. There are no reports of any injuries. Enquiries are ongoing.”
